A device which secures the access to your own four walls needs to be capable of intuitive operation by anyone. A minuscule screen and tiny buttons are certainly not the way to go. This is why the button for accepting calls has been designed large enough that it is easy to see and operate without glasses and with normal sized fingers. If need be, even with your elbow. And the buttons for the most important functions speech and door release are mechanically actuated. Which means everyone can understand their function with no further explanation, and they can always be accessed even if the display is not active.
The functional connection of two operating possibilities: The touchscreen is used wherever it has benefits to offer. If there are a lot of functions to choose from and activate, then touchscreen operation is simpler than large banks of buttons. But separate mechanical buttons have a distinct advantage too, which is why we use these for the central functions which have to be visible and easily accessible for all types of user.
Clear symbols, intuitive operation:
The most important button is also the biggest. The unmistakable mouth symbol clearly indicates what the button is for: to accept calls. The call tone is accompanied by parallel flashing of the mouth symbol, guiding the hand of the operator to the correct place. Once the call has been accepted, the mouth symbol lights up continuously. After an adjustable duration, the call is automatically ended to prevent noises from indoors being unintentionally broadcast to the outside.
The door release button clearly stands out – this enhances security as it cannot be confused or actuated by mistake.
