FAQ – Questions and answers about Siedle video door intercom systems
Which video intercom system should I choose?
In principle, it's safe to say that doorbell systems with cameras from a German manufacturer meet all requirements in terms of standards, security, design and quality. Which video intercom system is best for you depends on a number of factors:
Is your video intercom system to be installed in a single-family home, a two-family property or a larger building with multiple entrances? Does the building have 2-wire or 4-wire cabling? Do you want to be able to receive audio and video wirelessly via Wi-Fi or a mobile phone network and use this to operate the door release? Or are you looking for an IP video door intercom system?
All these questions can be answered by our partners in the electrical trade , who are experts in planning, installing and setting up intercom systems with camera functionality.
The wide range of products at Siedle caters to all requirements when it comes to intercom systems with cameras. We supply door units with loudspeakers, microphones and, of course, doorbells with cameras in a choice of four design ranges. This also includes the necessary power supply units and door releases, as well as lots of optional features such as card readers or fingerprint readers, a code lock for access control or theft protection, and letterboxes . Function modules are available for flush or surface mounting, as well as for installation in custom-designed façades.
Our indoor units are available as entryphones – in a classic design with a handset or without – with a monitor, as Siedle IQ for connection to Wi-Fi and the Siedle app , and as video panels .
What cameras are suitable for a video door intercom system?
Siedle cameras for video surveillance are suitable for a variety of applications, compatible with any door intercom system and entrance layout, and ideal for single-family homes and apartment buildings, as well as large residential developments and commercial buildings. Integrated into our Siedle Vario , Classic and Steel design ranges, they can be tailored to suit any architectural style and all structural considerations.
As a video installation kit , the cameras can be installed in any type of door structure or façade, with a letterbox for example, together with a doorbell, door speaker and call button panel, as well as all the other functions of a door intercom system.
The Siedle 130 camera is the standard model, with a 130-degree field of view that is sufficient for most applications. The top-of-the-range model, the Siedle 180 camera , is used where greater security is needed or preferred. Its 175-degree field of view extends almost completely from wall to wall. Thanks to excellent night vision, intelligent WDR technology and automatic switching between day and night modes, our cameras deliver perfect images at all times.
For additional outdoor areas – such as the cellar entrance in a single-family home or the garage entrance in a residential complex – our external camera can be added to the door intercom system. In IP video door intercom systems with our Siedle Access Professional IP system, the audio intercom system can be extended with any system-compliant IP camera – to serve as a door camera, concierge camera or for forwarding video images from the entrance door.
Can I add video surveillance to an existing door intercom system?
Modernisation projects and retrofitting are easy with Siedle products. We see door intercom systems as a long-term investment, view building communication as a system and take a modular approach to design. Our products are reverse-compatible – even after several decades.
If, for example, the old doorbell in a two-family property is going to be retrofitted with a camera, the existing two-wire or four-wire cabling can usually be used. This is also possible if the intercom system is being upgraded with one of our cost-effective Siedle video sets.
In our current upgrade promotion , we are offering upgrade packages at a special promotion price that are ideal for switching to a video intercom system.
Am I allowed to have a camera on my doorbell, and what do I need to be aware of when it comes to video surveillance?
Homeowners are permitted to use intercom systems with cameras, provided they are installed on their private property. However, you must comply with legal requirements and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), especially when using external or IP cameras. This is because photos and videos are considered personal data that can be used to identify people. The following aspects are particularly important:
Restricted use:
The video door intercom system may only be used for the purpose of access control . It is not permitted to monitor people for any other purpose.Data minimisation:
In order to collect as little data as possible, the camera should only record the entrance area or the doorbell.Storage:
Recordings should only be stored for a limited time and deleted regularly. Video recordings should only be stored where necessary (e.g. in the event of an incident).Transparency:
Any visitor will be able to see that a door intercom system includes video. However, visitors must be informed if they are being filmed, for instance by putting up a sign.
To ensure the privacy of others, the intercom camera must not monitor public spaces such as footpaths or roads, or any areas outside the property, such as a neighbour's house or property.
In apartment buildings, the use of a video door intercom system is not generally possible, as the entrance is considered a communal area.
All video systems, external cameras and IP cameras from Siedle, as well as the data storage devices for indoor units with monitor and video functionality, are designed using technology to prevent unauthorised access to recordings. This includes data encryption, regular software security updates and automatic deletion of image data in accordance with data protection regulations.
