System design
Design principles
The foundation stone of system design is the decision to produce not individual products but an open-ended system. Based on the modular principle, the elements connect to form a system. The system integrates the individual modules. System design ensures that every required function is realized neatly and aesthetically within a standardized formal framework. System design is timeless: New forms are created only as the result of new technologies. Cosmetic change for its own sake is detrimental, as system products are long-lived – and their design must remain valid for just as long as the products themselves. System design is not an end unto itself: Its conceptual benefits are intended to serve the user. System design encompasses far more than simply the design of products. It engenders, moulds and shapes the entire company and leaves no aspect of its market presence to chance.
