Siedle encourages up-and-coming generation of engineers

Siedle supports twelfth graders at the Robert-Gerwig School who are interested in pursuing a career in engineering. Because there is only one way to find out whether a career is the right one: Try it out. And just this is the aim of the one-year Student Engineering Academy courses - a joint project run by the Furtwangen University of Applied Sciences, The Robert-Gerwig School, Südwestmetall and Siedle.

As part of this project, 14 twelfth grade students are being given the opportunity to get to know what it means to work as an engineer from a variety of different angles. They have a chance to breathe in the university atmosphere, gain a practical slant on working in a company, and first and foremost: they plan and implement their own product - in this case a ringtone generator for their own front door. In future, when their front doorbell rings, they will hear their own self-installed ringtone. And they also get the chance to carry round their very own personally designed key-ring - designed using CAD at Siedle and cut on the laser punching machine from a solid brass blank.

Until the conclusion of the project at the beginning of December, the eleven boys and three girls will have completed a varied program - all outside of normal school hours. The Student Engineering Academy runs for a total of 30 afternoons, five of which will be spent in practically oriented training at Siedle. The students learn how to program a door intercom system, are given an insight into computer-aided design (CAD), project management and cost planning, and also have a chance to talk privately to the company apprentices about their experiences in the company.

The initiative to bring the 41st Academy in Baden-Württemberg to Furtwangen was the brainchild of Dean of Furtwangen University of Applied Sciences, Robert Hönl. It was under his direction that the youngsters programmed the electronic module for their own personal call tone.
