Building Communication

Camouflage

Eun Young Yi designed the Stuttgart Municipal Library as a monolith. The stringent design of the facade deliberately shuts the outside world out of this centre of learning. Nothing is allowed to disrupt the homogeneous outer skin of the building. This is why Yi decided to opt for Siedle Steel as the building communication system: The systems were designed precisely to the specifications of the architect and blend seamlessly into the building envelope.

Eun Young Yi achieved the monolithic appearance of the cube by dispensing with superfluous elements and attaching equal importance to all four fronts of the building. Clearly marked out as recesses, the open access points are located in the central axis of each facade, precisely representing the four points of the compass. The newly constructed building sections for deliveries and ventilation consistently pursue the square footprint. They will be linked to the main building in the future by a lawn accessible for public use.

The entrance areas reflect the consistent method used by Yi to reduce the necessary structural elements to their basic core statement. The ancillary entrances are located almost unnoticed in the facade. The communication technology blends in almost seamlessly: The flush systems have been painted by Siedle precisely to match the specific materials. They blend visually into their environment, all that is perceived are the necessary functions. For the four public entrances, the architect chose communication systems in brushed stainless steel which correspond to the hardware used on the doors.

The architecture of the cube consistently separates the interior of the library from the outside world and creates a democratic organization of the threshold: Visitors are equally entitled to enter the library from any of its four sides.

Within the square structure, Yi placed all the room openings and structural elements in upright formation and wherever possible, gave them a clear delineation. The building communication system using Siedle Steel was recessed flush into the facade to echo this deliberately staged effect.

Homogeneous design: The primary spaces of the building are designed to remain clearly readable. Eun Young Yi achieves this by the consistent use of homogeneous, minimized surfaces. The ancillary entrances for personnel use blend with the facade. Building communication with LED lights, flush-mounted video camera and access control is almost completely optically integrated.
