Market launch

Siedle launches its IP-based Siedle Access system. The first pilot projects have already been completed, and lively demand is already confirming the high hopes placed in the system. Visitors to the light+building will have the opportunity to experience Access in operation. Siedle will be demonstrating the market-ready system using a range of application examples - including the Siedle App for the iPhone and iPad.

Diversity - outside and in

From the outside, the IP technology at the heart of Access systems is concealed from view. A key characteristic feature of Access, emphasizes Project Sales Director Fred Penzin: "We are not limited to certain IP devices. Access customers have unrestricted choice from the whole diverse spectrum of the Vario, Classic and Steel Siedle systems. And Access permits even greater diversity inside the building than it does at the door. The broad spectrum of Siedle call stations is supplemented by concierge software, a virtual in-house telephone which turns any network PC into a video call station, a software module for integration into non-Siedle systems and the new App for iPhone and iPad. The open-ended design of the network makes this a highly flexible system: Where a network connection is available, any of these options can be installed. Non-Siedle devices such as TC systems or VoIP telephones extend the scope even further.

Less cable, more security

A special feature of the system becomes evident with a glimpse into the distribution: The network terminates at a door controller; from here to the door, the connection is established creating a transmission protocol developed internally at Siedle. This is a key security feature, as system development team member Jürgen Eschle explains: "We never route any IP protocol to the outside. Even if someone were to break open a door station and obtain access to the cables, they would not be able to connect to the network."

The nerve centre of every Access system, the server, is concealed within the unspectacular casing of an industrial PC. One thing is conspicuous here by its absence: the multi-core cable harnesses which merge together in conventional systems of a comparable size. Instead there is a single patch cable to a standard commercially available switch: "Access is based on IP standards. These encompass structured wiring, connection technology using plugs and sockets and the transmission protocols. Anyone able to plan and install a network will also be able to find their way round an Access installation", explains Sales Director Penzin.

Configuration and administration

To configure and administer Access, all you need is a web browser and access rights to the server. The whole system including all connected devices is centrally configured and managed. This system structure can dispense with transport and labour costs altogether in many cases. The Access specialist who understands the system can be based in any optional location, while most installations carried out on site can be performed by any IP-qualified installer. Even in cases where a device has to be exchanged, this can be done without any reconfiguration, as the server has a central storage and backup function. The method used for installing updates is smart and highly efficient. They are not loaded one device at a time, but as a package via the server. All the devices independently update themselves to the correct software status.

Simple planning

These functions, alongside almost unrestricted ranges, very high user numbers and other key characteristics of the system, indicate a bias towards largely commercial use. Although some enquiries are received from private home owners, the main field of application for Access is considered by the manufacturer to lie with medium to large-scale complex projects. Here, what count are flexibility and an open-ended structure, simple operation and minimized work input from the planning stage through to administration. Because the system topology is largely decoupled from the subsequent use, planning is a far easier process than with conventional systems.

With Access it is enough to route the network to the correct locations and ensure that it is adequately dimensioned. Whether audio or video is required, for instance, is of no importance to the planning process. The decision is taken at a later stage by choosing the type of connected call station or its licensing.
