Haus der Wirtschaftsförderung

Listed architecture meets groundbreaking technology: The City of Hanover opted to use the IP-based installation system Siedle Access for communication in its Haus der Wirtschaftsförderung building. The heterogeneous uses contained within this building demand a system of communication technology which is simple to plan and able to adapt flexibly to future changes.

The Haus der Wirtschaftsförderung is one of the signature works of Peter Behrens (1868 to 1940). Behrens was known first and foremost as an industrial designer and architect and was a co-founder of the Deutscher Werkbund, a German confederation of architects, artists and designers. The building was commissioned by the rubber producer Continental AG between 1912 and 1914 as its central headquarters. Today, this listed building is owned by the City of Hanover, and is home to a number of different regional organizations from around the city and the region. A proportion of the office space is given over to startup companies and independent contractors. The City of Hanover has now completed an extensive renovation of the building. By opting for the IP-based installation system Siedle Access, it has signed up to the upcoming building communication standard: network technology.

Lean technology

The listed status permits no communication technology whatsoever to appear at the front of the building. The main entrance remains open during office hours and is only closed towards the evening. Visitors calling outside the opening hours register with the relevant office at the rear entrance; Employees gain access using the integrated access control system. Inside, separate call stations with card readers secure the individual areas. There are no in-house telephones, all communication takes place via analogue and digital telephone systems. Employees talk to visitors standing outside and open the door. The camera at the rear entrance relays its video images to the concierge workstation at the entrance. A standard commercially available PC assumes all concierge functions and receives calls when offices are unmanned.

Decisive: Scalability and flexibility

The heterogeneous uses contained within this building demand a system of communication technology which is able to adapt to ever changing demands and allows expansion with minimal investment. These were the benefits that prompted the developer to opt for IP technology with Siedle Access. A decisive motivating factor was primarily the scope for expansion offered by the Access system, and also the capacity for flexible integration of existing technology.

The scale of the former administration building is considerable. At present only the rooms up to the second floor are rented, the third and fourth floors are unused. As an IP-based communication system, Siedle Access can be scaled practically at will, with the option to integrate additional storeys if necessary using a network cable. This offers a decisive benefit if the organizers should decide to expand upstairs, or when reorganizing or extending units within the currently rented space.

The requirements of the different tenants in the building are highly complex. Each secures its own area with an audio intercom which transmits a signal over the network and the TC system to the telephones of the individual employees. The system used in the Haus der Wirtschaftsförderung had to accommodate both classical TC systems and VoIP systems and also take into consideration the individual requirements of the different system administrators.

The link between the door communication and the TC system is flexible and offers scope for simple upgrading. Although classical in-house telephones have been dispensed with at this stage, facility exists for them to be used at any time in the future. All that is required is a network connection. PCs can just as easily be transformed into video call stations using Software Client. Once the network topology has been installed, the IP-based system provides a highly flexible platform for uses required by future tenants.
